The Partido de Mar Chiquita is located in the center-east of the Argentine Republic.
Within the Province of Buenos Aires, on the Atlantic Ocean coast.
It is part of the Pampas region and extends along the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires.
Its boundaries:
To the South, with Mar del Plata.
To the East, with the Atlantic Ocean.
To the West and North, with partidos of the interior of Buenos Aires.
Its coastal position, combined with rural environments, lagoons and wetlands,
converts it into a transition territory between the sea,
the Pampas plain and freshwater and brackish water systems.
This nature reserve features MaB is centered on the lagoon called Mar Chiquita, which should not be confused with the large Mar Chiquita in the northeast of Córdoba province or with the lagoon Mar Chiquita in the north of Buenos Aires province.
The Partido de Mar Chiquita has registered more than 208 species of birds, distributed in over 50 families.
The best represented families are:
Anatidae (ducks) with 14 species; Tyrannidae (tanager, flycatcher, etc.) with 13 species;
Scolopacidae (snipes) with 12 species;
Laridae (gulls and terns) with 11 species and
Furnariidae (ovenbird, weaver, etc.) with 10 species.
88 species of birds live in the coastal lagoon alone, with 27 families.
There are two large regions: the south, with a predominance of marine species; and the north, of greater extension, with
dominance of estuarine and continental species.
Due to its ornithological richness, it is classified as one of the important areas for bird conservation in Argentina.
